Islam Observed: Religious Development in Morocco and Indonesia - Clifford Geertz

"In four brief chapters," writes Clifford Geertz in his preface, "I have attempted both to lay out a general framework for the comparative analysis of religion and to apply it to a study of the development of a supposedly single creed, Islam, in two quite contrasting civilizations, the Indonesian and the Moroccan."

Mr. Geertz begins his argument by outlining the problem conceptually and providing an overview of the two countries. He then traces the evolution of their classical religious styles which, with disparate settings and unique histories, produced strikingly different spiritual climates. So in Morocco, the Islamic conception of life came to mean activism, moralism, and intense individuality, while in Indonesia the same concept emphasized aestheticism, inwardness, and the radical dissolution of personality. In order to assess the significance of these interesting developments, Mr. Geertz sets forth a series of theoretical observations concerning the social role of religion.

The Near East in the Far East - Clifford Geertz

Lucette Valensi’s extensive work on the social history of the Mediterranean has been, for all its variety of subject and focus, almost continuously concerned which the way in which cultural forms arising within one stream of history, one historic civilization, work out when projected into the interior of another: French and Algerian, Jewish and Muslim, Iberian and Moorish, Venetian and Ottoman. Ideas, sentiments and view of life, ways of being in the world, find some of their most striking, and most diagnostic, expressions far from their point of origin: in the way they color traditions quite other than their own, live with a particular
vividness in a foreign place.

I should like to use this celebratory occasion to practice the difficult art Valensi has so carefully developed, and to cross over an even greater distance and an even broader difference: the Middle East and Southeast Asia. In particular, I wish to consider the role of Islam as a projection of, for want of a better term, “Arabic Culture or “Civilization” into the “Culture” or “Civilization” of Indonesia. This is, admittedly, a subject, at once very hard to focus, more than a bit touchy, and rather grand in scale. But, if only for those reasons, it provides a good “Valensian” subject: a familiar tradition inserted into an unfamiliar place.

Daun Diatas Bantal (Leaf On A Pillow)

"Daun Di Atas Bantal" depicts three street children living in the Javanese ancient capital of Yogyakarta, and a street stall operator who looks after them with gentle love. The children, living on the street far away from home, sought motherly love from this woman, and survived every day, dreaming of a bright future, only to follow a tragic fate. In the title, the world "Pillow" represents mother, and "Leaf" means small life, i.e. children.

The film is edited in a documentary style, featuring actual street children. Before shooting began, I frequented slums to feel what it is like to live on the street. By the time the film was completed I felt like I was their real mother.

Social and economic crisis of Indonesia has created a swarm of street children, abandoned by their parents and being unable to attend school. Imposed with serious sacrifice amidst war and poverty, such children survive by the day with a burning yarning for a motherly figure who could heal their emotional scars.

The Suharto regime imposed strict censorship on movies. Even the system of film distribution was controlled by his close relations. This film was completed in May 1998 in the midst of the Indonesian crisis that shook the world. The premier screening of this film at the Cannes Film Festival, immediately after President Suharto was forced into resignation, attracted strong responses.

-"Daun Di Atas Bantal" won numerous domestic and international film awards, including the Asia Pacific International Film Festival. Its powerful social messages moved and shocked broad audience, even triggering a social movement.

Rindu kami padamu (Of Love and Eggs)

“My market is full of stories,” says the little girl, “just like soap operas on television . . . some funny, some strange, some sad.” In this small market in Jakarta, most of the stories begin with loss. The girl is deaf; she lost her family when her home was destroyed. A friend at school lost her mother because of her father’s gambling and abuse. A boy and his older brother who lost their parents struggle to carry on the family business. But amidst the despair, the children maintain a sense of hope: the girl who lost her family sends a wish for a dome for the mosque by carrier pigeon; her friend protects a prayer rug, so it will be ready when her mother returns. The boy’s daydreams lead him to a young woman he calls Cantik – pretty – for whom he carries packages and cooks noodles with eggs; maybe someday he will call her “Mom”. Ramadan, the month of fasting and prayer, is at an end, and everyone in the market is preparing for Lebaran, the Holidays. Most Indonesians travel to visit family for Lebaran, leaving their jobs in the cities to return their home villages.

However, for the children of the marketplace, the holidays could be hardest: a carrier pigeon lands in a stationer’s stall, ruining the greeting cards set out for display; a prayer rug disappears while the little girl sleeps; and the relationship between the boy and his brother grows tense. But during Lebaran, nothing is truly lost: a father is reunited with his daughter, a man has a change of heart and prays for his wife’s return, and the older brother orders a new stamp to mark his eggs – in the shape of a heart.

Long Road to Heaven

Long Road to Heaven is a 2006 Indonesian feature film about the 2002 Bali bombing, by Kalyana Shira Films. The film was directed by Enison Sinaro and written by Wong Wai Leng and Andy Logam-Tan.

It tells the story during three different times: the planning a few months before the bombing, its execution in 2002, and the trials in 2003. The story is not chronologically linear. It starts with the explosion and then moves from time to time until all three plots culminate one after the other. At the beginning of each scene, subtitles tell the date and location of the scene.

Planning stage

This portion of the film takes place in a hotel in Thailand, where Hambali (Saputra) is meeting with other members of Jemaah Islamiah, including Muklas. Hambali wishes to strike back for the capture of the Jemaah Islamiyah agents in Singapore, where an attempted bombing was stopped. He also wishes to make a statement by carrying out the next attack in September, when remembrance for the September 11th, 2001 World Trade Center Attacks will be at its highest. Muklas presses Hambali to change to another, softer location because security in Singapore will be too tight for any plans to succeed, and they will be unable to make the attacks by September if they are to happen in Singapore. He also suggests Bali for the location of the bombing. After putting the idea to a vote, the bombing is approved for Bali.

Execution of the attack

In Bali, Imam Samudra, as well as Amrozi and his brother Ali Imron begin making preparations for the attack. They pick Paddy's Pub and the Sari Club as the best targets for bombing because it will minimize Indonesian casualties because both cater exclusively to foreigners. The brothers then contact a bombmaker and request that he make a special bomb which will maximize casualties. The day before the attack, the garage where they are building the bombs is visited by police following noise complaints. Ali Imron manages to stall the police, giving the bombmaker time to hide any incriminating evidence. After the police leave, Amrozi congratulates his brother for his quick thinking.

The next day, Amrozi, Imron, and the person who will activate the bomb park outside the Sari Club and wait for the backpack bomb to explode. Imron shows doubt about what they are doing, but in the end does not stop the bombing. Amrozi and Imron leave, and everything goes as planned.

Across the city, Hannah Catrelle (Foulkes) is awakened by the explosion. She rushes out to the site on her motorcycle, and is asked to bring an injured man to the hospital, where he later dies of his wounds. Catrelle is asked to bring the body to the morgue, where she sees a scorched corpse wearing a necklace similar to hers. She returns to the site and helps Hajj Ismail (Pandelaki) co-ordinate the rescue efforts. She is approached by Tim Dawson (O'Hare), who asks her if she has seen his daughter, and shows her a picture. Catrelle recognizes the necklace, and says that she thinks that Dawson's daughter is in the morgue. She leads him to the body, but Dawson says that it is not his daughter. Catrelle shows him the necklace that the corpse is wearing, and Dawson collapses in grief.

Returning to the site of the explosion, Catrelle snaps at Hajj, asking him what Muslims want by causing grief such as this. Pak Haji tells her that he is hurt by her generalisation, and explains that Islam is a peaceful faith, and the perpetrators of the bombing do not have a proper understanding of Islam or the Qur'an. Catrelle apologizes and explains that she moved to Bali because it was her boyfriend's favourite place in the world. She then explains that her boyfriend died in the World Trade Center attacks, and they buried an empty casket because his body was never found. Haji apologizes, just before a rescuer rushes up to them and says they have found a survivor. Catrelle recognizes Julie Dawson (Treleven), and tells Dawson that her father is looking for her. Having found Julie Dawson, Catrelle wonders who the corpse is. Deciding that the dead victim shouldn't be buried namelessly, Catrelle asks around, and finds nothing. She almost gives up, but sees Tim and Julie Dawson one last time. Tim thanks her and walks off, but, after being asked about her necklace, Julie reveals that she gave it to a friend at the club. Julie then tells Catrelle the victim's name. Catrelle returns to the morgue, and writes the victims name on a piece of paper. A corpse with an elephant tattoo is also seen.

The trials

Seven months after the bombing, Australian reporter Liz Thompson (Hill) goes to Bali to cover the trials. She hires a taxi driver and translator, Wayan Diya (Komang), to take her around the island. Diya at first refuses, but Thompson pushes him and triples the amount she originally offered in order to pay for his service. They first go to the location of the bombing, where Thompson takes pictures of the site, then to the trial, where Thompson covers a portion of Amrozi's trial. While she is in the courtroom, Diya goes to a nearby restaurant to watch the trial, and later throws a rock in the direction of Amrozi while Amrozi is transferring to the police transport. Realizing how stressful it is for Diya, Thompson tells him that she is sorry, and says that she doesn't need any more help. In order to try and mend fences, Thompson inquires Diya about his elephant tattoo. Diya explains that it is Ganesha, and one day when they were drunk, he and his brother had it done together.

Tragedy in Jakarta 1998 (Indonesian Students Movement)

It is a moving documentation of the epoch making change following the fall of Indonesia's longest serving dictator Suharto-who died 3 week ago. This is the 10th year anniversary of that earth shaking Reformasi in Indonesia -which succeeded. But the Reformasi in Malaysia -which had not succeeded -had attracted little interests for remembrance despite the 10th year anniversary. Yet the lessons need to be learned or the same mistakes could recur. To get some inspirations may be we can start by looking back at the successful Indonesian Reformasi?

Pengkhianatan G 30 S PKI (The Movie)

This movie was shown each year on Indonesian TV to perform the national trauma of the incidents of 1965 in Java, Bali and elsewhere in Indonesia. It is a propaganda movie of the New Order of the Indonesian military dictator Soeharto whose rule was established in the aftermath of the mass killings. The movie is filled with lies ignoring historical facts. There was no conspiratorial meeting of the leaders of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) right before the kidnapping and killing of six high generals of the Indonesian army. When the dead bodies of the generals had been found a few days later, no signs of torture at all was reported by the doctors and experts involved in the case.

This movie had only the intention to justify Soeharto's military regime whose violations of human rights are well-known. That Soeharto's most favorite military historian Nugroho Notosusanto was involved in writing the screenplay is hardly surprising, but to find such highly rated Indonesian intellectuals as Arifin C. Noer (screenplay, was leading in Indonesian theatre in the 1970s) or Umar Kayam (played Sukarno, well-known sociologist and novelist) gives one quite some thoughts on their other artistic and literary works.

Voces inocentes (Innocent Voices)

Voces inocentes (English title: Innocent Voices) is a 2004 Mexican film directed by Luis Mandoki. The plot is set during the Salvadoran Civil War in 1980s, and is based on writer Oscar Torres's childhood. The film serves as a general commentary on the military use of children. The movie also shows injustice against innocent people who are forced to fight in the war. It follows the story of the narrator, a boy named Chava.

A young boy, in an effort to have a normal childhood in 1980's El Salvador, is caught up in a dramatic fight for his life as he desperately tries to avoid the war which is raging all around him.

Armed only with the love of his mother (Leonor Varela) and a small radio that broadcasts a forbidden anthem of love and peace, and faced with the impossible choice of joining either the army or the rebels, Chava finds the courage to keep his heart open, and his spirit alive, in his race against time.

Osama (film)

Osama is a 2003 film made in Afghanistan. It tells a story about a young girl who disguises as a boy, Osama, that exposes the cruelty of the Taliban, and was the first film to be shot entirely in that country since 1996, when the Taliban régime banned the creation of all films. The film was an international co-production between companies in Afghanistan, the Netherlands, Japan, Ireland and Iran.

Although the title of the film highlights an allegorical relevance to Osama bin Laden, there is no further similarity.

A 12-year-old Afghan girl and her mother lose their jobs when the Taliban closes the hospital where they work. The Taliban have also forbidden women to leave their houses without a male "legal companion." With her husband and uncle dead, having been killed in battle during the Soviet invasion and their civil wars, there are no men left to support the family. Unable to leave the house without fear of arrest and torture, the mother is left with nowhere to turn. With no other choice, and inspired by a story her mother tells about a boy who went under a rainbow and became a girl, she disguises her daughter as a boy named 'Osama'. Osama manages to secure a job at the local chai tea shop, but 'his' effeminate ways quickly arouse suspicion among the other boys.

Eventually, in a drive to collect soldiers, the local boys, including Osama, are taken from their homes or work by the Taliban to be trained as soldiers. At the training school, they are taught how to fight and conduct ablutions, and Osama realizes it can only be so long before she is found out. Several of the boys begin to pick on her, and eventually her secret is outed in one of the movie's most vicious and disturbing scenes. Arrested, she is put on trial, and as this case is without precedent, her life is spared when she is given in marriage to a man who delivered a videotape filmed by a western journalist who is also being tried.

Les Choristes (The Chorus)

In a prologue, internationally renowned conductor Pierre Morhange receives word of his mother's death and returns to France for her funeral. Following the services he is visited by Pépinot, a classmate at the correctional school Fond de L'Etang (literally, Bottom of the Pond) they attended. Pépinot has brought Morhange the journal of Clément Mathieu, the school supervisor and unofficial choirmaster. As Morhange begins to read, we flashback to 1949 and the arrival of middle-aged Mathieu at the school. Resigned to abandoning his dream of composing music, he is optimistic about his new position despite the attitude of his predecessor, who doesn't conceal his relief at relinquishing his post. Prior to his departure, he warns Mathieu about some of the more troublesome students, including Le Querrec, whose booby trap severely injured Maxence, the school's elderly custodian, and Pierre Morhange, a boy with an angelic face but devilish temperament. Not all of the students are malevolent, however, such as diminutive orphan Pépinot, who continually assures everyone his father will be coming for him on Saturday. The school's strict, sadistic, and unsympathetic headmaster Rachin believes firmly in the theory "Action-Reaction," and together with teacher Chabert administers corporal punishment and terms of confinement on a regular basis, but their methods prove to be ineffective.

After several failed attempts to discipline his students, Mathieu decides to try to reach them through music. He turns his class into a choir and teaches the boys his original compositions. His efforts are disrupted by Mondain, a new arrival who, although not officially crazy, is a borderline case with an extremely violent temper and anti-social attitude. His blatant ignoring of the rules soon causes the others to follow suit. Meanwhile, Morhange is disturbed by what he perceives to be a budding relationship between his single mother Violette and Mathieu, who offers to help her enroll the boy in a conservatory in Lyon. Eventually Mondain is accused of stealing and is removed by the police. When Mathieu discovers the true identity of the thief, he urges Rachin to clear Mondain of the charges, but the spiteful headmaster refuses. He fires Mathieu after he organizes an outing for the boys during Rachin's absence, even though they were spared from serious injury from a fire set by a vindictive Mondain while they were away from the school. We already know how Mathieu influenced Pierre Morhange's life; what effect he had on the future of little Pépinot is revealed in the film's final moments. He took Pépinot with him, on a Saturday.
